Outward Bound/Aoraki Bound Scholarships

Outward Bound/Aoraki Bound Scholarships are awarded to individuals wishing to reach their full potential through challenge and adventure in the outdoors. For more information on courses available through Outward Bound visit www.outwardbound.co.nz or for information on Aoraki Bound visits www.aorakibound.co.nz

Scholarships will be awarded to individuals based in the CTOS area (i.e. the designated Southland region including the Queenstown, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Tapanui and Heriot areas) and priority will be given to applications from:

  • Year 12-13 students from secondary schools in the Trust's area not already receiving Outward Bound/Aoraki Bound scholarship funding from other sources;
  • Staff of community-based Health and Social Service sector organisations (people employed by either local or central government departments or agencies will generally be ineligible to apply);
  • Applicants who might not otherwise get the opportunity to attend Outward Bound.

Please note however that being awarded a CTOS Outward Bound/Aoraki Bound Scholarship does not constitute acceptance onto an Outward Bound or Aoraki Bound course. Applicants are still responsible for and must meet the fitness and any other requirements as deemded necessary by Outward Bound or Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu for acceptance and attendance on a course.

Aoraki Bound

Successful applicants aged 18 years and over have the option of participating in an Aoraki Bound course if preferred, which is a cultural and personal development programme offered by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu in partnership with Outward Bound. For further information visit to www.aorakibound.co.nz

Am I Eligible?

  • Eligibility for an Outward Bound scholarship will include Year 12-13 individuals from secondary schools in the CTOS catchment.
  • Eligibility for an Outward Bound scholarship will include individuals currently working (either full time, part time or as a volunteer) in a health or social service sector organisation, where:
    • Applicants are from a third sector organisation that would meet the Trust's criteria for allocation of CTOS operational funding. 
    • Applicants are working for a health or social service sector organisation based in the CTOS area which has at least 50% of its members residing within the Trust's area.
    • Applicants have resided in the CTOS area for a period of at least two years prior to making an application.
    • There must be a demonstrated need for financial assistance from the applicant's organisation.
  • CTOS will take into account all aspects of each applicant including where relevant: goals, aspirations, work habits, school/community involvement, and history and commitment to the health and social service sector and/or Southland.

Information for Recipients

Recipients are required to supply CTOS with the following information prior to the payment of their scholarship:

  • a signed Conditions and Obligations form.
  • a recent photograph.

An accountability report will need to be submitted once the Outward Bound/Aoraki Bound course for which the funding was awarded has taken place.
