Tertiary Education Scholarships

The Community Trust of Southland (CTOS) offers Tertiary Education Scholarships for individuals planning to undertake or currently undertaking study at a New Zealand tertiary institution.  The scholarships are valued at $2,000 per annum, and may be awarded for up to three years.  The scholarships are not means-tested; however Trustees may consider giving additional financial support to individuals who demonstrate particular financial hardship.  Applications are welcome from students of all ages, from school leavers through to mature students.

Criteria

CTOS will take into account all aspects of each applicant including:

  • Academic ability
  • General interests
  • School and/or community involvement
  • Work habits
  • Personal aspirations and motivation to succeed
  • Potential and likelihood of success

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a 20 minute interview with the Trust's selection panel.  You may need to arrange time away from school or your place of employment to attend this interview

Eligibility

  • Must be a NZ citizen or have permanent residence status and must have/or their guardian have resided in the CTOS area for no less than two years.
  • Must be studying a degree level course (or equivalent), full time or part time.
  • Must be planning to undertake or are currently undertaking undergraduate tertiary study.
  • Must be studying at a New Zealand tertiary institution, where tuition fees are charged.

Funding Information

  • The scholarships are awarded for a fixed amount of $2,000 per annum, for a maximum of three years.
  • In cases of financial hardship the Trust may award additional scholarship funding over and above the $2,000 per annum.

Information for Scholarship Recipients

CTOS will make payment for the first year upon receipt of the following:

  • confirmation that you have passed NCEA Level 3 and qualified for entrance into university (if a school leaver)
  • confirmation of your enrolment at a tertiary institution (this can be in the form of a fees receipt or course approval form)
  • bank account details

Continuation of the scholarship will be at the discretion of CTOS and is generally dependent upon achieving a pass for the course.  Scholarship recipients will receive payment for subsequent years by providing the following:

  • An official copy of end of year examination results
  • Confirmation that the recipient or guardian's family home is still in the Community Trust of Southland's area
  • A progress report outlining the year's study and any highlights
  • Re-enrolment details for the following year of study
