About the Premier Teams & Events Fund

This is an annual contestable Fund of $100,000.  

The Fund is part of our support for premier and elite sport, with the objective of supporting Regional Sports Organisations and other sporting organisations to:

  • meet the costs associated with running premier teams competing outside the region;
  • attract and host premier sporting events in the region.

Who can apply

Any Regional Sports Organisation or other non profit sporting organisation, within the Trust's area, are eligible to apply including:

  • an incorporated society or charitable trust registered with the Companies Office (; and
  • any other legally constituted body which can demonstrate a formal constitution or rules and that exists for community purposes.

Please note: Hosted premier events must be held in the Community Trust of Southland's area.

When to apply

The current round opens 22 December 2016 and closes 15 February 2017 and applications are considered in April. 

What to apply for 


  • Assistance towards a premier team(s) to compete at national competitions (maximum of two teams per code - applications need to be completed on spearate forms)
  • The level of competition considered only includes: national, trans tasman and international.
  • Costs considered are limited to: travel, accommodation, transport (mini van and fuel), food and competition entry fee. 


  • Assistance towards costs associated with hosting events.
  • Level of competition e.g. South Island, national, trans tasman or international.
  • Events held in the CTOS' area only.

Factors we consider for Premier Events

  • How regularly is the event held in CTOS area?,
  • Number of participants and spectators expected?,
  • Likely number of visitors to the area,
  • Level of economic benefit to CTOS area, and
  • Financial need of the applicant.

Please also note: As demand is often greater than the funding available we must also prioritise applications to enable support for those projects that will give the greatest benefit to the people in our area.
