The Community Governance Aotearoa Trust have launched a 'Good Governance Code'.

The Good Governance Code will help guide you through what good governance looks like in Aotearoa New Zealand. More than half a million people serve on the boards of community organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand and the aim is to create a Code of Good Practice for the governance of community organisations in Aotearoa.

Getting your governance right means you will be best placed to achieve the ambitions of your organisation and serve your community. You will have capable, diverse, and engaged board members who can access the code to help our community sector govern well.

Climate Action Shared Resource and Tika Transition Framework

Climate Action Aotearoa has proudly launched a ‘Shared Resource’ and Tika Transition framework to help funders along their climate action journeys. The resource contains a substantial amount of information and encourages users to make the framework their own.

After launching the Funders Commitment, the first action of Climate Action Aotearoa was to create a shared online resource for funders. The resource provides guidance towards a just, equitable and tika transition that reflects our unique Aotearoa context.

Being tika is about taking right action. A tika transition is about embracing tikanga Māori as a source of solutions and upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Associate Professor Maria Bargh, 2019).

The shared resource sets out the principles of a tika transition, provides a guide towards a tika transition for each of the seven funder commitments and is packed full of useful information and examples of positive action relating to:

Take
An exploration of climate change and its effects

Utu
Actions towards balance on local to international scales

Ea
Realising the seven funder commitments

Guidance and resources are also provided on how to implement a tika transition in key aspects of philanthropy: governance, strategy, investment, grantmaking and operations.

“The web-based Shared Resource aims to provide relevant Climate Action intelligence, policy, and implementation guidance to the philanthropy sector as well as helpful information for the community sector,” says Linn Araboglos, Chief Executive of Wellington Community Fund, who chairs the working group. “We believe it will help to inspire co-ordinated and impactful climate action within our regions across Aotearoa.”

We invite you to start your own Tika Transition journey by exploring our shared resource here: www.climateactionaotearoa.co.nz/resources-home

What to expect from the Incorporated Societies Bill changes

Community Networks Aotearoa Announcement

What to expect from the Incorporated Societies Bill changes...

The Incorporated Societies Bill is soon to become an Act.

Once it passes its third reading in parliament, all that's required is the signature of the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Dame Cindy Kiro.

The New Zealand Companies Office, which holds the Register of Incorporated Societies has released a simple, and informative document on the key changes contained in the current draft bill.

These are yet to be finalised, but CNA expects little to no change.

Points include:

  • Review how members apply to join their society
  • Members will need to consent to become a member of a society.
    • Societies will need to make sure their processes include asking for, and recording, that consent.
  • Review their committee and officers
    • Each society will need to have a governing body (for example, a committee), it won’t be enough just to have officers.
  • The new law will specify who qualifies to be an officer of a society.
  • At least 3 officers must be members of the society.
  • Each society will be required to have a contact person whom the Registrar of Incorporated Societies can contact when necessary.
  • Comply with new financial reporting standards
  • Ensure they have documented dispute resolution procedures
  • Review and update their rules
    • You may need to add some new rules or change existing ones so that they match the new requirements.
  • Reregister their incorporated society
    • Currently, the deadline for re-registering with all requirements is Dec, 2024.

CNA will be releasing easy-to-follow steps on what you need to do, where you can go find help, and the deadlines you need to know about.

Chairing the Board - Video Toolkit

Centre for Social Impact has created a new series of four videos that aims to help those who are new to the Chair role and to prepare people who may aspire to take on the position.

These videos are part of the National Action Plan for Community Governance, created by a group of organisations and community leaders to create resources to support people in board roles in community organisations. The Action Plan has six key outcome areas, one of which is that ‘All Boards are well chaired’.

There is currently little support available to Chairs for the technical knowledge and skill development needed to be an effective Chair. The Plan addresses this initially with free on-line training sessions that will be available to new and aspiring Chairs.

The content for these videos was created with the input of more than 30 experienced board chairs, based on their experiences about what they wished they knew when they got their first chair role.

The Chairing the Board video toolkit  was launched via Zoom event on 14 April with a line-up of expert speakers and a panel discussion for new and aspiring Chairs of community organisations.

The videos can be accessed here:

  1. Back to Basics
This first video is about getting back to basics.  They key things you need to know to get started as Chair – what the role is all about and how to chair a great meeting.
  2. Board Dynamics
This second video is about the dynamics around the board table and your role as Chair about ensuring the board gets on and gets working.
  3. Getting Strategic
This third video is all about your role in helping your board be strategic and develop a great strategy.
  4. Focus on Process
This fourth and final video is all about your role leading risk, compliance and other good board processes.

Developing Data Capability in Your Not-for-Profit

Smarty Grants created Developing Data Capability in Your Not-for-Profit to help guide you through the six types of data that not-for-profit organisations most often work with — such as fundraising data and program data — and what you can actually do with that data.

It’s a framework intended to be used as a preliminary resource to help get your organisation thinking about data before embarking on data projects.

Outcomes and Evaluation

Setting your outcomes is a great user friendly 4 page resource which explains what outcomes are and how to write them.

The following websites contain useful information, resources and tools to help with understanding your impact and how you can develop and measure your outcomes.

What Works

The What Works website aims to help community groups to show the value of their work by helping people gather robust data and information to tell a real story about what they are doing and the difference it makes. If you need to reflect on your work, demonstrate effectiveness and keep improving your practice, then What Works is for you.

Evaluation Support Scotland

Their website offers a range of useful evaluation tools including how to set your project's outcomes or how to develop a logic model.

Result Based Accountability (RBA)

RBA offers a practical way in which organisations can evaluate the results of their programmes. A number of government agencies are also preferring that the service providers they are contracting with use RBA as it tracks impact at both ‘performance' (how well something was delivered) and ‘population' levels (the ‘real world' effects).
