Types of Grants

The Community Trust of Southland has two types of standard grant funding available, being Operational Grants, and Project Grants.

The Trust is usually a partial funder of projects, and will only fully fund a project on rare occasions, generally where the project is deemed by the Trustees to be a very high priority, and there are no other sources of funding reasonably available to the applicant.

Applicants are expected to have explored all potential sources of funding including other funding organisations, and local and central government funding, as appropriate. Priority is generally given to projects where it is evident the organisation is making a contribution itself, where that is possible.

Operational Grants are available to support the operational expenses of (generally) health and social service organisations. Operational Grants are not available to national organisations unless the organisation can demonstrate a direct community benefit for the people of Southland.

Increasingly the Trust is approving Operational Grants that cover multi-year periods.

An example of an Operational Grant would be funding granted to the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, to provide services for blind persons in Southland.

Project Grants are provided to assist with funding of one-off community projects, or programmes e.g. the construction of a community centre, or purchasing equipment.

Organisations are expected to plan their projects carefully, and in particular are required to identify the initial capital costs for the project, and where appropriate the ongoing operational costs in the future. Organisations must detail where the remaining funding for their project is to come from, and the majority of this other funding should be confirmed before applying to the Trust.

Donated materials and volunteer labour may be accepted as part of an organisation’s contribution to a project. Volunteer labour relates to building-associated projects, not the time involved in for example preparing for hobby classes, coaching, attending meetings, administration duties, etc. For the purposes of calculating the value of an organisation’s voluntary labour contribution to a project, the Trust values volunteer labour at the prevailing minimum wage rate. Documents quantifying any voluntary input must be provided in support of any request to have voluntary contributions considered.

A health or social service organisation wishing to apply for both an Operational Grant and a Project Grant must submit both applications for consideration at the same time.

There are some things that the Community Trust of Southland does not fund, such as:

  • Travel
  • Commerial Organisations
  • Retrospective Projects
  • Uniforms
  • Accommodation
  • Sponsorships
  • Endowments
  • Individuals

If in doubt, give the Community Trust staff a call on 03 218 2034 or 0800 500 185 to discuss. In the event that your project is something that the Trust cannot assist with, our staff may be able to direct you to an organisation which may be able to help.
